Is this happening?

1,432 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: VFY S9, E1: We Have A Home
Location: Various

Location: Starbase 400, Jax and Dee Quarters

Jaxon walked into the closet to pull out both duffel bags. He could not believe that, even in the 25th century, Starfleet still uses duffel bags to transport gear. He started to pull clothes from his side of the closet. "I can't believe this is really happening." He said with a big, warm smile on his face as he observed Dee walking in. Their orders I've gone through, they're now being transferred.

Their new destination was Valhalla Fleet Yards. Jax was a little torn about their transfer. For many years, Starbase 400 felt like home. He knew that Commodore Hogan is specifically requested her. Even though he was not sure why, he knew that the Commodore herself wanted her to be the new research and development director for the fleet yards. He had yet to receive his orders, but he was told that when he got there, he would meet with Commodore Hogan, and they would discuss his relocation to the fleet yards.

She came up the side of Jaxon, kissing him on his cheek.

"I've never liked packing for anything. Holidays, short trips and especially not transfers. " She muttered as she went through her own duffel bag, checking everything was there.

"Who exactly is Commodore Hogan, anyway, and why does she want me specifically?" She asked out loud. "Promotion is great, but this feels a little unusual. I might be just imagining it all. You know what I'm like when my mind gets going on some conspiracy notion."

"I really don't know. I know that she's part of Theta Fleet. I know that she works for Fleet Admiral Domingo Martinez. Starfleet gives us our orders, and we follow them, right? I'm like you, though, I'm a little sceptical. When we arrive, I suggest that you ask her." Jaxon started to, as he continues to pack up his duffel bag.

"I hope to find out more when we arrive, that's for sure. But yes, we go where we are sent, as that's just how it works in Starfleet. Part of me doesn't really want to leave Starbase 400. I have a lot of good memories here, not just as Deezell but as Raekwon as well.

Jax stops packing for a second, and pulls Dee and close for a hug. "I didn't meet your previous host, but I know how sentimental 400 is to you. It will be hard to leave, but this could also be an opportunity for us and our children."

She hugged him tightly. Pulling back slightly so her eyes met his. "I think you would have liked Raekwon. He was quite a character and somewhat of a rogue. But he was highly respected by pretty much everyone on Starbase 400, to the point where hundreds attended his memorial service, myself included, obviously. It will be hard to leave and then to adjust to something new and different, but, as you said, it could well be an opportunity for all of us. Do you know what our transport arrangements are? "

"Sounds like a stand-up guy, but probably good that I didn't meet them. It would have been strange to date you if I would have known him." Jaxon pointed out to her. He didn't mean that mean or disrespectfully, it would have been hard to associate his feelings for her and his friendship with the previous host if he would have been put in that situation.

" I understand you perfectly. I had to deal with the week when Raekwon's bit on the side showed up, hoping for a 'good time'. That was, shall we say, awkward. "

Jax decided to change the topic. "I am almost ready to go, sorry for keeping you waiting." Jax said, as he looked to Dee. He was dragging feet, because he did not want to leave 400 as well, but they were now out of time, and it was time for them to go.

She was glad he changed the topic, as recounting the encounter with Verena would be rather uncomfortable. "No worries my love. We will get there in the end. Let's go."

"Kids should be leaving daycare soon. Once they arrive, we will be ready to go." Jax said, as he looked to the door. He realised they had a moment, then pulled her onto the bed to kiss her, when the doors opened up, and Lara and Velo ran through the doors, practically jumping on the bed. They knew today, they would be leaving for an adventure and a new home. Jax just grinned, thinking his timing was off on getting that kiss.

Deezell Vox folded their arms, watching the scene unfold with a slow, knowing grin.

“Timing, Jax… impeccable as always,” they said, voice carrying that familiar mix of amusement and mock‑judgment. “One heartbeat away from a dramatic, sweeping kiss, and boom” Deezell gestured toward the two kids now bouncing on the bed like it was a launchpad. “ambushed by pure, unfiltered enthusiasm.”

They stepped closer, ruffling Velo’s hair and giving Lara a playful tap on the shoulder. “Can’t blame them, though. Big day. New horizons. Whole worlds are waiting. Hard to compete with that kind of excitement.”

Then Deezell shot Jax a sideways look, smirking. “Don’t worry. You’ll get your moment. Probably. Maybe. Assuming these two ever stop vibrating with anticipation.”

They clapped their hands once, sharp and bright. “Alright, crew. Adventure calls. Let’s move.”

Jax just smirked at her probably comment; any of that meant Mama wanted some attention later. And he was more than happy to give it to her later. For the moment, though, they needed to focus on getting the kids out the door.

"My order says we're supposed to board the Bushido. I think you'll be happy with our accommodations. I heard even the Commodore herself will be greeting us." Jaxon started to say with a smile on his face. He knew that the ship was a Sabre class and it was one of Dee's favourite designs. Jaxon would never tell her this, but it wasn't his favourite design; he preferred something a little bigger.

"Bushido? If memory serves me well, it is a Japanese moral code and philosophy governing samurai culture, emphasising honour, loyalty, bravery, and self-discipline. Interesting. I'm guessing she's probably a Sabre class. I am glad we will be meeting the Commodore, as I still have a few questions, but I will do my utmost to be tactful. "

"Tactful?" Jaxon asked curiously. He wondered what she meant by that. You know that she wasn't really happy about leaving 400, he wasn't but he also understood the opportunity this was for the both of them. And their children were super excited about it.

"Yes. Politely asked specific questions about what exactly the Commodore expects from me as the Director of Research and Development. It's always a good idea to have a clear view of someone's needs and expectations."

"I'm going to play nicely right now. I think you know what I have to say to that but we have a little ears around." Jaxon said with a loving smirk on his face. He grabbed his bags and then he knows a couple more sitting on the couch he grabbed a little kid's bags too. "It is ready for the next adventure to start?" He has openly to his kids and to his lovely wife.

Lara and Velo both giggled with delight. "Can't wait, Daddy" Velo replied first. "I'm ready to go." Lara chimed in. " I think we have a corum on getting out of here. " Dee added.

"Wait I have a free hand, where I can hold my wife's hand?" Jax said as he reached out to hold her hand. He has a feeling this wouldn't be the case for much longer, more likely somebody forgot a bag or one of the kids is going to give him something else to hold on to. He was partially teasing as you walked over to Dee.

Little Lara stepped forward and slipped her hand into her mother’s, beaming up at her father.

Dee glanced down at Lara, her expression softening before she looked back at Jax. “Maybe later,” she said with a teasing smile. “My hands are a bit occupied at the moment.”

Velo took Jax's hand as they walked out, knowing that this would be the last time they would be on Starbase 400 and in these quarters. Part of them was sad that they were leaving, but he also knew that this was a great opportunity for their family. The scene fades away.
