Mission:
VFY S9, E1: We Have A Home
Location: USS Bushido, Various
Location: USS Bushido, Transporter Room
Jaxon and his family beamed aboard the USS Bushido. They were on the transporter PAD as he noticed, a red-headed lady burying the rank of commodore on her shoulders. Jax instantly recognized her as Commodore Carol Hogan. He was about to say something when he noticed his wife beat him to it.
“Good morning, Commodore. Lieutenant Commander Deezell Vox and Lieutenant Jaxon Ruveer, reporting for duty — children included.” She smiled.
Carol had that warm loving mother smile on her face when she saw the little ones, it took everything she had just stop herself from reaching out and hugging them. "Commander, I am so pleased that you're able to make it on short notice." Carol said and she reached her hand out to shake Dee"s hand.
" Not a problem at all, Commodore. " Dee replied taking her hand, shaking it "Although getting Lieutenant Ruveer out of bed this morning was somewhat more difficult than our children. " She replied, giving Jaxon a smirk.
Carol just raised her eyebrow, take it to herself did Dee just ego stroke her husband? She grinned thinking maybe she misunderstood, but she motioned with her hand for them to head towards the doorway. She quickly changed her thoughts back onto the objective at hand. "I have a surprise for you Commander." She simply said as they started to walk out to the corridor.
Location: USS Bushido, Corridors
Jaxon wondered what the surprise was, and he smiled at Dee. It was partially her fault why he had a hard time getting up this morning. They were up pretty late last night. Even after all these years plus 2 plus kids later they still were deeply in love with each other.
Dee, Jaxon and her family followed the Commodore.
"I do like surprises, Commodore, except maybe surprise birthday parties. I have had too many unfortunate incidents as a result of those and not just in this life time either. Raekwon had several of them, with the last one being so badly planned and executed."
"Well I think you're going to like this one." Carol suggested as a continued walking down the corridor and heading to the turbo lift. She was eager to tell Dee and Jax her wonderful surprise.
Jax was curious what the announcement was going to be, he had a feeling that Carol wasn't going to tell him right away. Probably try to build up the anticipation or maybe she needed to go to a location. He wondered if it was a surprise party.
" I hope so, It has been an odd few days sorting out the move and the transfer. But that was kind of to be expected. " Dee replied as she, Jaxon and family joined the Commodore in the Turbo lift.
Location: USS Bushido, Turbo lift
As they entered the turbo lift doors, Carol called out. "Bridge, normally kids would have to ask permission to come on to the bridge, but I think we can make an exception this time." Carol suggested that she looked down to both of the children. And then she looked back up to Jax and Dee.
Jax could see the both children were excited. " I want to make it clear children, no touching of anything." Jax insisted to his children, as the lift started to head towards the bridge.
Lara and Velo, both frowned but they understood. This wasn't the first time they had been told of this, whenever they had visited where their mother and father worked. Despite being little rascals, they did know when to behave.
Dee summised that whatever the suprise was, it was extremely unlikely to be party as those simply don't happen on the bridge of a starship, unless the troublesome omnipotent being, known as Q, was involved.
The turbo lift came to a stop, a tone was heard notifying the occupants its destination had been reached to expect the doors to open, which the promptly did.
Carol was the first to walk in, and somebody had called out "attention on deck." The entire Bridge crew snap to the position of attention. Carol smiled as she waved with her hands for everybody to settle down. "At ease everyone, I have an announcement to make." Carol suggested that she looked around to the other officers and then to Dee and Jax and their children.
Carol grab the data pad from her hand and brought it up so she could actually start reading it. "Lieutenant Commander Deezell Vox, you're here by ordered to assume command of the USS Bushido. Effective this date, I am transferring command Of the Bushido to you. Computer transfer command from Commodore Carol Hogan to Lieutenant Commander Deezell Vox, authorization alpha alpha pie charlie 12 delta 45 niner."
The computer started to chirp, then the computer voice came on to say. "Command transfer to Lieutenant Commander Dezell Vox." The computer called out. Carol waited to be relieved, as she reached out to shake her hand.
Dee had been blindsided and was doing her best to not look as flustered as she felt. She looked wide eyed at Jaxon before turning to the Commodore.
"I relieve you of the Command of the Bushido, Commodore. " She stated, shaking Carol's hand.
"Well this is only the first of three commands I have to give you. A rare treat by the way for a lieutenant commander. This will be your flagship, the Bushido is a nice ship. You're also getting a star base and command of a research and development team we're not talking to small team we're talking thousands under your command. You might be asking yourself why give that to you a lieutenant commander and not like a full Commodore somebody like myself I'll be honest with you. We're short of senior officers and your name came highly recommended. We're giving commands now to ensigns. However I don't plan on keeping you at Lieutenant Commander for long, 6 months with good service will be promoted to full commander in 6 months after that you'll be a captain. So I'm going to fast track you to Captain. I realize this is a lot to take in so take a moment if you need it." Carol said that she stopped for a moment to catch her own breath that was a lot for her to say.
Jax what's dumbfounded, he didn't really know what to say to that. He softly said, congratulations, Captain." He knew naval time traditions with dictate that the commanding officer of a Starship would be referred to as Captain regardless of the rank.
Dee was stunned but absolutely thrilled at the same time. She tried to think what to say several times. Time seemed to pass like an eternity but for others it was mere seconds.
"I think I will take a moment if that's ok with you Commodore. I will make use of my um ready room." She turned to Jax and gestured him to follow with the children.
"Of course." Carol said if she walked over to the command chair. She realized that she just thrusted everything up on her. She would have to process everything, Carol just helped that Dom was right, and that she'd be able to quickly adapt.
Location: USS Bushido, CO Ready Room
As they both walked in with their children into the ready room, Jax looked around and notice how drab the room looked. Well rightfully so no commanding off your head successfully taking command of the ship. He assumed that Carol had just dragged it over from the fleet yards. He can kind of tell that the ship was brand new. Or maybe it just had new carpets cuz it had that fresh carpet smell to it. The ironic thing was there was no carpets on the ship.
After this point the kids have been pretty quiet but he had noticed as soon as they went to the ready room, they were all over the place looking at the couches and the chairs and the big old desk. Jax walked over to Dee, "how you holding up? I know that was a lot to take in."
"A lot?" She exclaimed. "Lara, Velo. Mummy is a little flustered so could you please take a seat in the couch." "Ok mom" Velo replied taking his little sister's hand, and sitting with her on the couch.
"Jax, could you get them a drink of something. I'm going to sit behind my desk and think for a moment, thanks "
Jax had never seen her so flustered well not in a long time. He walked over to the replicator and got the children and himself some beverages then he took them to the couch. He had even replicated them a couple small toys, since they're bags were taken to their room. "Take your time I have the kiddos."
Dee smiled. " Thank you so much, Jax. I love you so much. I will need time to process all of this but I do think we need to make progress, so I think we need to get underway." She stood from behind her desk and headed out of the ready room, back onto the bridge.
" Commodore. I am somewhat overwhelmed but this is to be expected. It would be wise for us to get underway and I can process things further on route."
"Of course, Captain, I assume you will have Lieutenant Reuveer serve as your acting first officer?" Carol asked l, as she stood up from the command chair and offered it to Dee.
"For the time being, yes. " Dee replied, taking her place in the command chair.
" Helm, clear us for departure and once confirmed, plot a course for Valhalla Fleet Yards and engage at warp 5. "
"If you need me, I'll be below decks. Go ahead and get acquainted with your vessel," Carol suggested as she walked over to the turbo lift. Carol knew that she was throwing Dee, into the deep end, but the best way to learn was to jump feet first and for the best.
"Thank you, Commodore. I think the Bushido and I will get to know each other in no time. "
The helmsman, the young Ensign Lisa Read, turned around in her chair. "We are cleared to leave Starbase 400 controlled space. Course plotted and ready for your word, Captain."
A hush settled over her, a moment she had imagined a thousand times, one she once believed lay years beyond her reach. Yet here it was, unfolding around her in real time. She let her gaze sweep across the bridge, taking in the faces of the crew who would soon become her responsibility, her allies, her family.
Steadying herself, she lifted her hand in the same deliberate gesture she had watched Admiral Picard make countless times in the archived recordings of the Enterprise‑D. She drew in a breath, feeling the weight and wonder of command gather in her chest, and then…
"Engage"
The Bushido’s impulse engines flared, casting a brief amber glow as they pushed her clear of Starbase 400. The light faded, the ship seeming to pause for a heartbeat. Then her warp nacelles ignited, brightening with focused power. In a single, brilliant surge, she leapt forward, stretching into a streak of light before vanishing in a distant, pin‑sharp flash of white.
Ensign Lumira was Manning the Tactical station, as the ship jump to warp. "Know any contacts on sensors, our traffic lane looks good." She called out has she waited for Dee to respond.
"Excellent, keep an eye on things as we go. Update me on any changes."
Dee responded
Jax stood there for the moment, debating about saying anything knowing that she was giving command-level decisions. But he also felt like this couldn't wait. "I'll get the kids situated below decks, and then I'll head back to the bridge as soon as I can." Jax suggested today has he waited for a response. He didn't want to add to her stress but he didn't keep in their children on the bridge probably wasn't a good idea.
Dee glanced over at Jax and felt the weight of it, all the demands pulling at her as a new Captain, all the moments she’d let slip past her without him or the children at her side. Guilt tightened in her chest. She mouthed I’m sorry, a quiet promise meant only for him, before she answered aloud.
"Yes… good idea. No rush." She offered him a small, warm smile, the kind that said she hadn’t forgotten what mattered.
Jax nodded with a warm smile, he took both kids and left the bridge. He left her on the bridge, seeing her in the command chair. He could tell that she seemed like she was overwhelmed. He wondered why Carol put her in this position; admirals always seem to be a little chaotic in their approach to things. He assumed this was some kind of test to verify she was ready for command. He had no idea that's exactly what Carol was planning; she liked to put people in tough positions and watch them shine. It only strengthened their character.
Dee settled into the captain’s chair, letting her fingers glide along the smooth curve of the armrests. The reality of it, her chair, her bridge, washed over her in a warm, steady wave. She had reached a milestone she once imagined was years away. Ready or not, it no longer mattered; the moment had arrived, and she was living it.
What made her smile, slow and genuine, was the ship itself. A Sabre‑class. The very class she’d fallen in love with as a fresh‑faced ensign, still green and eager, staring up at one in spacedock and dreaming impossible dreams. And now she commanded one.
